“Following my QI training, I now have Quality Improvement high on the department’s agenda and my team are enthusiastic about quality improvement.”

Emma Edgar is a Clinical Lead Nurse for Cardiology at Harrogate District Hospital. Emma manages the cardiac nurse team and the heart failure specialist community nurse team and is responsible for the cardiac catheterisation laboratory in the Heart Centre and the provision of outpatient cardiorespiratory services.

Emma is focusing on the general quality improvement work that her team is doing in cardiology which is improving the look of the department and working on her organisation’s health promotion agenda. Emma’s team have recently achieved Harrogate District Foundation Trust Bronze team accreditation and are now planning for moving to Silver.

Following Emma’s Silver QI training, she now has quality improvement high on the department’s agenda and her team are enthusiastic about quality improvement. Emma found the Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) framework user friendly and useful as a basis for a QI project. Since attending the course, Emma feels that QI is a great tool for team building and for engaging staff to feel some ownership for the direction of the department. Emma’s department developed their own vision and mission statement which was an extremely positive exercise and Emma now feels that there is active engagement amongst staff to improve quality.

The team’s first quality improvement project is looking at cardiac health promotion and the team already have work underway on this.

Emma attended the Improvement Academy Silver Quality Improvement training day, funded through the Yorkshire and Humber AHSN on 19th November 2018.
